STATEMENT FROM SHOOZITECH ON THE NEW PROPOSED VAPING LAWS
News has been presented that the current Government is looking to ban the retail sales of ALL vaping products in Australia, restricting their access to pharmaceutical products only. This includes those without nicotine.
absolutely oppose this proposal. Black markets are propped up by prohibitionist approaches and in no time in history has prohibition ever been successful in tackling issues. This approach does not make Australia a world leader in Vaping policy and reform, it simply puts us at odds with every other Western democracy. Back to the stone age.
It is not a coincidence that the current flourishing illegal nicotine vaping black market was fueled by the previous Governments short sighted implementation of a prescription model for nicotine in October of 2021. One ill-informed move by a Government to restrict, what should be a legal consumer product, lead to people going the path of least resistance to single use nicotine disposables.
This propped up a black market that inevitably lead to more youth getting their hands on the products as these illegal sellers are not ID-ing their customers. If the Government wished to tighten the stocks of regulation by flat out banning these products, they will simply give the black market more leverage.
It is obvious, when you apply any form of logic to this situation, that the best approach would be a regulated consumer approach which works in places like the USA, Canada, UK and New Zealand. Australia should legalise the sale of nicotine vaping products and restrict their sale to licensed premises who at the very least ID their customers and curb the growing youth vaping epidemic. A ban will only add fuel to this current dumpster fire of vaping policy.
It is an indisputable fact that vaping is less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco products. Countless worldwide peer reviewed studies back this up. And yet, whilst cigarettes are completely legal to sell in any retail setting, vaping is the big issue we need to ban outright? It makes zero sense.
Meanwhile, our business would be forced to consider selling cigarettes and tobacco as an avenue to keep our doors open and our people employed. Those who continue to do the right thing by the current, already ridiculous, vaping policy in this country will now be punished due to the actions of those who don’t do the right thing? A ban on legitimate operators won’t stop the illegal market.
If you agree that these proposed new laws are a terrible idea then have your voice heard now!
Call all of the elected representatives below and tell them why you think an outright ban would be detrimental. Share your personal vaping story. The time is now:
